We will cover domain names and hosting plans, explore various methods for working with WordPress, discuss securing your site with SSL and, most importantly, help you customize your site to make it your own.

This session is open for anyone to join whether you are new to WordPress or not. Bring with you any questions you might have and feel free to share your experience with others.

About the presenter:

Nadine Zein has over 10 years of design and development experience. She’s a Boston University web development graduate with a graphic design Bachelor of Arts degree from the American University of Beirut.

As the founder and creative director of Boavi, a boutique creative design and digital technology agency, she has supported companies of all sizes with their web application needs spanning a wide range of fields from architecture and education to natural resources and medical research.

Meetup: Intro to WordPress themes

Join us next Thursday, January 30th at the Whitby Public Library for an intro to WordPress themes. Themes play a huge role in WordPress because they control the entire look and feel of your website. Your site’s layout, styling, and customization options all depend on the theme you use.

Are you new to WordPress? This session will be a great crash course on everything you need to know to find, install, and customize the perfect theme for your site.

Longtime WordPress user? Come ready to answer questions, share advice, and tell us what your favourite go-to WordPress themes are.

Can’t make it in person? Not a problem. We’ll stream the session via Zoom so you can join remotely from wherever you are. You’ll be able to join from your phone, PC or Mac. The invite will be sent out the day of the meetup.

We’ll publish the recording and notes after the meetup.

Meetup: Intro to WordPress plugins

Thanks to everyone who joined us at the Whitby Public Library for our Intro to WordPress plugins meetup. We had 17 attendees join us in person, and we streamed the session to the WP Durham group on Facebook.

As mentioned during the meetup, we’ve installed the bbPress plugin and opened registrations on this website. That way we’re not relying on Facebook (or any other 3rd party platforms) to host our discussions.

Create your user account to join our group.

After you’ve created an account and logged in, head over to the forums to ask questions and chat with other group members. Keep in mind that all discussions are public for now, so that other folks can find and benefit from the stuff we share.

Now… on to the recap!

Watch the replay on our Facebook page

Our Intro to WordPress meetup was a grand tour of the WordPress administrator back-end. We used our group site (WPDurham.ca) as the example.

This was our second meetup of the rebooted series; it’s also the first meetup we’ve recorded and streamed through our new Facebook group.

Thanks to the Whitby Public Library for providing a great venue with fast wifi and an AirCast-enabled smart TV. We’ll try our best to make the library our go-to space for future meetups.

And special thanks to GoDaddy Pro for covering our venue costs again this month. They just published a new resource collection to help folks start and grow a web design business.

Here’s a quick recap of what we covered during the meetup.

Fall Social & 2020 planning

We held our Fall Social yesterday to regroup and make plans for 2020. It was a good turnout representing a mix of WordPress experience levels and interests.

Our big question for the group was what do you want to cover?

There were great suggestions — all collected and organized below — touching on different aspects of building a website and using WordPress. We’re going to take these ideas and work them into our event planning for future meetups.

A big thanks to everyone who joined us yesterday. Additional thanks to Brock Street Espresso for hosting us, and to GoDaddy for covering the booking costs.

See you next month! Check the Meetup site for details and to RSVP.
